Ball Hill turbine project complete

All 25 turbines for the Ball Hill wind turbine project are up, energized, and nearly ready to deliver power to the electric grid.

The 108-megawatt producing facility in the towns of Hanover and Villenova has been in development since 2006, with construction finally starting in 2021. Ball Hill Wind, LLC states it will offer enough power for about 41,000 New York State households.

“The project experienced New York state permit approval delays in late 2022,” according to Jessica Kitchen, manager of global communications for Northland Power, which runs the Ball Hill Wind, LLC. “Due to the harsh weather in Western New York over the winter months, it was decided to reschedule the (wind turbine generator) installation for summer 2023 during a more favorable season.”

The project also needed special use permits from Hanover and Villenova.

Workers “successfully interconnected with the grid and energized as of Oct. 5,” Kitchen said. “We are currently completing the final stages of interconnection, with commissioning teams on-site actively working to test and commission each turbine until we reach full output. Commercial operation is anticipated within the coming weeks.”

Northland has agreed to pay Chautauqua County nearly $1.2 million for road repairs made necessary by turbine transportation. Local residents were angered by blasting operations at the site.

Ball Hill is Chautauqua County’s third wind farm, joining one in Arkwright and another in Charlotte and Cherry Creek.
