City reports good news on crossings

By M.J. Stafford 2 min read

The Dunkirk Common Council heard some positive news earlier this month about the city’s rough railroad crossings.

Councilwoman Natalie Luczkowiak opened the discussion by asking Department of Public Works Director Randy Woodbury, “I’ve heard there’s been communication with the Federal Railroad Commission regarding the crossings on Routes 5 and (60)?”

Woodbury responded, “We had a Zoom ... (with) City Attorney (Michael) Bobseine there, we had certain other people from the city on that Zoom meeting. And we were also honored to have Mr. Robert Maze on there, who is a citizen who collected 629 signatures (on a petition to fix problematic crossings) that really go their attention. We put him front and center.”

The local track masters for Norfolk Southern and CSX were also involved. “They all agreed they would completely rebuild all these… troubled at grade crossings in the spring. In the meantime they suggested some signage to say that’s its rough, slow down, stay in your lane-type of things.”

DPW will seek approval from the New York State Department of Transportation for the signs. Woodbury said they can be made in-house.

Bobseine also thanked Maze for his petition Drive, and lauded CSX and Norfolk Southern for their cooperation.

“They’re stepping forward. They want to be good neighbors,” he said. “I really appreciate it that everyone is working together for the benefit of the city and its residents.”
