Comedy night to benefit Rural Ministry

A comedy night at Shorewood Country Club in the town of Dunkirk will benefit the Chautauqua County Rural Ministry.
The event is set for Oct. 20. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $10. There will also be a 50/50 raffle and a wine pull.
Featured comics are Alex Brady and Liz Reaves. Brady is a Buffalo native who has been performing stand-up comedy for six years. He is a featured comedian at clubs in Buffalo and Rochester and "can be found performing at clubs all along the 90 and beyond," according to the flyer promoting the Oct. 20 event.
Reaves started doing stand-up in 2017 after a dare from her brother and is based at Buffalo's Helium Comedy Club. She was the winner of the 2021 Buffalo's Funniest award. "She takes the curveballs life and work throw at you and turns it into laugh-along stories," according to the flyer.
Sponsors for the comedy night are Fresh & Fancy, Larry Spacc GMC, Larson-Timko Funeral Home, and Duper's.
Last week, the agency announced Joe Basil and several employees donated approximately one and a half tons -- 3,000 pounds -- of non-perishable products. In addition, Dunkirk Senior Center donated 850 pounds of food. Several other businesses, such as Specialty Metals have reached out to Rural Ministry to conduct food drives for the upcoming holidays. "At this time, we are seeking items for Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets, along with gifts for children," said Kathleen Peterson, Rural Ministry executive director.

In August, a press conference was held at the agency on Washington Avenue in Dunkirk to highlight delays in getting grants from Nourish NY, after its administration was moved to the Department of Health, from the Department of Agriculture and Markets. The delays have led to deep worries about funding for food banks such as the Rural Ministry and its Friendly Kitchen.
