Pomfret board to hold off replacing Christy

The board is currently short a member after the resignation of Brett Christy. It currently has Christopher Schaeffer, John Sedota, Dan Pacos and Ann Eckman, who is not pictured but attended the meeting remotely.

The Pomfret Town Board has decided to not immediately fill its open position.

Brett Christy resigned effective Sept. 7, leaving an open spot on the five-person board. With three people running for two seats in November, the board has decided to wait for the results of that election.

Town Supervisor Daniel Pacos suggested advertising for the open seat and taking applications, but “We really can’t do anything now until next month … there’s one meeting before the election left, hang on and see what happens.”

“There is no mandate either way in this particular instance,” said town attorney Jeffrey Passafaro. There were some concerns in September, immediately after Christy resigned, that the state Board of Elections would make Pomfret fill his seat in the November election. That is apparently not the case.

Pacos said if the board appointed one of the November election candidates and they won, the person would have to resign until January, when they can take the seat they won in the election.

Eckman and another current board member, John Sedota, join Adam Rak (who attended the October meeting) in seeking one of two seats.

“We should let the voters speak,” Eckman said. The fourth current board member, Christopher Schaeffer, agreed.

Pacos suggested advertising for “letters of intent” to join the board, “with the caveat that we have three people running for two seats … We’ll have the election, we’ll know what’s what then.”

The board did not make a formal decision on that suggestion.
