DeJoy to participate in ARC training

The Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) named Vincent DeJoy, Director of Planning and Development for the city of Dunkirk, to participate in the 2023-24 class of the Appalachian Leadership Institute, a fully funded leadership and economic development training opportunity for individuals currently living and/or working in one of ARC's 13 Appalachian states. The 2023-24 class comprises a diverse network of professionals representing all 13 Appalachian states and a wide spectrum of perspectives and sectors, including tourism, healthcare, education, civil service, and more.
DeJoy's responsibilities include the planning for the economic development of the City of Dunkirk, an economic hub for a part Western New York's Appalachian Region with a regional population of over 30,000 residents, that experienced significant economic distress following the recent closure of a large generation prominently plant located on 76 acres of Lake Erie shoreline on the city's outskirts. Vince's goal for Dunkirk is to help guide its transformation to economic prosperity and to reimagine it as a Lake Erie waterfront tourist destination.
"I am honored to have had the support of Senator Borrello and Mayor Rosas in the application process as well as the support that I have received from the Dunkirk Common Council. When I received the acceptance letter for the leadership institute fellowship, I thought of Senator Robert F. Kennedy who was responsible for bringing New York into the Appalachian Regional Commission, and how important it is for Western New York to establish and strengthen regional connections with the ARC states for economic development," DeJoy said.
U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer congratulated DeJoy in a letter stating, "I applaud you on decades of public service to the Southern Tier region and Chautauqua County. Your record of service speaks for itself. The dedication that you have demonstrated to your community and to helping and improving the entire Appalachian Region shows why you have been selected for this program."

The Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) named Brandy Singleton, Executive Director/CEO to participate in the 2023-2024 class of the Appalachian Leadership Institute, a free leadership and economic development training opportunity for individuals currently living and/or working in one of ARC's 13 Appalachian states. The 2023-2024 class comprises a diverse network of professionals representing all 13 Appalachian states and a wide spectrum of perspectives and sectors, including tourism, healthcare, education, civil service, and more.
The nine-month curriculum is anchored by six multi-day seminars across the Appalachian region focusing on each of ARC's strategic investment priorities, which aim to strengthen economic and community growth in Appalachia. The fourth class will run from through July, focusing on skill-building seminars and best practice reviews to prepare fellows to:
-- Design effective economic development project proposals
-- Integrate community assets into long-term economic development strategies.
-- Identify resources available to spark economic and community development.
-- Locate and access investment capital from a variety of public and private sources.
-- Prepare competitive applications for public grant opportunities.
-- Use expanded connections and leadership skills to create strong regional partnerships.
Appalachian Leadership Institute fellows were selected via a competitive application process to reflect the Appalachian region's wide range of economic development challenges, opportunities, and strategies.
