Dunkirk finalizes budget and fire protection contracts

The town of Dunkirk's major financial responsibilities have been finalized for 2024.
The final figures for the Dunkirk town budget and fire protection contracts with the East and West town fire departments were officially approved unanimously at a recent meeting. The West Dunkirk Fire Department will receive $79,200, while the East Dunkirk Fire Department will receive $155,844.
The town's final budget amount is $1,223,189, including special districts of $348,942. The tax rate is 84 cents per $1,000 of assessed value, and the budget is under the cap of a 2% increase.
"I just want to thank Jean (Crane) and all the members of the board for your input into this," Town Supervisor Juan Pagan said. "I thank you all for a job well done."
Also approved by the Town Board was an agreement with the city of Dunkirk Police Department for enhanced police protection. The contract included a 2% raise from the previous year's contract, amounting to an increase of $1,990.80.
The town also received its fourth quarter distribution of sales tax from the county in the amount of $128,288.13. The funds are split between the general and highway accounts, with $83,387.28 (65%) going to the General Fund.
The board also approved the purchase of an automated external defibrillator for the Town Hall and court at a cost of $2,139. Priscilla Penfold, town supervisor-elect, made the motion, seconded by outgoing Town Councilman Henry Walldorff, a life-long member of the West Dunkirk Fire Department.
Town Councilman Dr. G. Jay Bishop will arrange the purchase. Bishop also volunteered to provide training on use of the unit.
