The Fredonia Central School District has finally put all the pieces together to move forward with its most recent capital project.
After running into obstacles with a previous contractor, the district's planned upgrades at the Wheelock School have been on pause while the district sought new partners to fulfill the district's needs. The project includes blacktop improvements at Wheelock, but the focus has been on safe and secure entryways to the district's Early Childhood Center, the Wheelock School.
At a recent Board of Education meeting, the district's remaining needs were met with the approval of two separate bids related to the project. Young and Wright Architecture is representing the district to oversee the capital improvements.
"We are excited to be moving forward. ... This is good news. Thanks to Young and Wright for turning this around very quickly," Fredonia Superintendent Dr. Brad Zilliox said. "We're back on track and making progress as soon as possible on the entryway at Wheelock."
The more costly bid approved at the recent meeting, by FSC Systems, LLC, was in the amount of $32,300 for door access control systems, door hardware, and an intercom scope. The district also approved a bid in the amount of $7,070 from CDW-G, an information technology products company, for cameras to be placed in the entryways of the building.
"We look forward to getting this wrapped up as soon as possible," Zilliox said.
The separate bids combine with another bid recently approved by the Board of Education from Transit Construction, at a total cost of $35,000, for the installation of a teller window at Wheelock, along with a coiled fire shutter. While the cost of the project in its entirety exceeds what the district originally expected, additional funding from the Smart School Bond Act has been allocated to even out the cost.
"We are in the same ballpark," Zilliox said.
