Gowanda pursues tuition waiver for children of employees

GOWANDA -- The Gowanda Central School District is pursuing a way to make its school community more welcoming of its employees' families.
The Gowanda Board of Education has instructed the district's Policy Committee to design a policy to waive tuition for employees who live out of district but wish to enroll their children as students at Gowanda.
After discussion at previous meetings, the Board of Education was presented with three avenues on the topic at a recent meeting: to drop the subject, to include it in contract negotiations, or to craft a policy for Board approval. The members of the Board in attendance, with Board President Max Graham absent, instructed the Policy Committee to proceed with crafting a policy for Board approval or denial. Surveys were previously conducted throughout the school community to inform the Board in making its decision.
Also at its recent meeting, the Board approved the establishment of the Top Ten Achievement Award and the Panther Cares – Health and Science Scholarship, each of which are sponsored by the Gowanda Boosters Club.
The Board also approved the resignation of Special Education Teacher Joe Pinter and the appointment of Thomas Majkut as a Teacher Aide. A Corrective Action Plan regarding the district's unrestricted fund balance was also approved by the Board.
The next scheduled meeting of the Board of Education is today, at which point the Board will likely receive a recommendation for a bid approval regarding the pool repair project. The district hopes to complete the repair in time for next school year.
The district also recently installed its new playground equipment, which is available to children beginning at age 3. The playground is now open for use, with only a cushioned floor left to be installed in the spring.
Gowanda will also be holding its first play since the pandemic, "Almost, Maine", on Nov. 17-18 at 7 p.m., free of charge thanks to sponsorship from the Seneca Nation, One Feather Pallet, and Designer Pools.
"I encourage the community and everybody to come out and see it," said Gowanda Superintendent Dr. Robert Anderson. "It will be a great show."
