ERIE, Pa. — Earlier this month, more than 40 Fredonia High School students participated in the 71st Annual Gannon University Model United Nations Conference, alongside hundreds of other high school students in an interstate simulation.

Fredonia brought 15 delegations to this year’s conference, with each delegation submitting a position paper. Since the first week of school, the Model UN team has stayed after school every Friday to work on their position papers.

Their dedication and hard work has certainly paid off.

Only three awards are given in the category for position papers, and Fredonia brought home two of the three awards. Brianna Whitfield, Monica Chen, and Rosemary Gugino were recognized for their outstanding position paper, while Andrew Cowan, Ava Hartung, and Madeline Saunders were recognized for their excellent position paper.

In addition to being recognized for their position paper, Hartung, Cowan, and Saunders won best delegate awards for their work representing Egypt. This is the third year in a row that Cowan and Hartung were named best delegate, a first for Fredonia High School.

Raena Beckley was awarded best delegate for representing CNN in the Press Corp. In the Press Corp, students develop a pen name, attend committee meetings, post updates on social media, and write press releases and articles.

Fredonia also took second place for Overall Best Delegation. Additionally, Fredonia students were recognized for their outstanding effort in representing their countries at the conference.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Model United Nations Club at Fredonia High School. The club was originally founded by Susan Cobb with the mission of offering students an opportunity to learn more about the world around them. Today, Patrick Newell and Tom Donovan are proud to be the advisors of this organization and are extremely grateful for all the support this organization receives from parents, students, and the community.
