Picking up the pieces Brocton reeling after winds strike village

BROCTON — From power outages to major damage to Ryckman Park, the heart of the village, Tuesday’s storm left its mark in Brocton.

Power outages were experienced throughout various parts of the village and the town of Portland, as was the case in many areas across the region. Brocton Mayor Craig Miller stated that members of the Village’s Electrical Department worked all night to restore power to residents, led by Department Head Joe Majkowski. Miller witnessed the crew working around 8 a.m. Wednesday and noted they had not yet returned home.

“Inside the village, we had minimal outages. Joe (Majkowski) spends a lot of his time in the fall trimming trees to eliminate outages,” Miller said.

But even with all the preemptive measures to brace for a storm, Tuesday’s event created significant damage to the village, along with the rest of the region.

“There were numerous trees and tons of limbs down,” Miller said. “We’ll clean up one day at a time, depending on what happens weather wise.”

Crews from the Village of Brocton and the Town of Portland collaborated to restore power to a mobile home community to repair an electrical pole. A private road was constructed by the crew just to enter the area to do the repairs.

Also among the notable examples of damage in the village was at Ryckman Park. The park suffered significant damage from tree limbs falling on the playground equipment. Miller mentioned late spring to early summer as a possible timeframe for when repair work could begin.

“We’re going to get in touch with the insurance company, wait to hear what their take is on it, and go from there. We’ve got to rebuild it somehow,” Miller said.

The playground equipment was purchased through grant funding, so the Village is unsure of what the next steps will be if the insurance company does not cover the damage. Seeking additional grant funding for the repairs is among the options the Village will evaluate.

As a member of the Brocton Volunteer Fire Department, Miller took shifts with his fellow members of the Fire Department directing traffic along Route 20, with traffic backed up after the closure of the thru-way.

“That rain, it felt like ice pellets hitting you in the wind,” Miller said.

Miller credited the cooperation between the Brocton and Portland Fire Departments to help keep travelers safe during the storm.

“That’s just part of what the Fire Departments do. You get out there when you can,” Miller said.
