Thousands remain without power in north county
Trees block an intersection at East Second and Robin streets in the city of Dunkirk.
More than 5,000 National Grid customers in Chautauqua County remain without power after strong winds whipped through the region.
Most of the outages are in the north part of the county, specifically the towns of Portland and Pomfret as well as Dunkirk and Fredonia.
More than 600 customers were without power in Frewsburg, by far the most in the south county.
A wind advisory remains in place until 7 p.m.
“Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects,” the National Weather Service office in Buffalo said. “Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result.”
National Grid said it was distributing dry ice at “targeted locations hit hardest by the storm.” The dry ice is available from noon to 4 p.m. at the Dunkirk Fire Training Center, 665 Brigham Road, Dunkirk.
“Customers are asked to bring a cooler or paper grocery bags to transport dry ice to their homes, and company personnel will provide information about its proper handling,” National Grid said.
National Grid said it has deployed more than 3,500 line, service, tree, damage assessment and public safety workers across upstate New York to assess and repair damage to the electric system.
“They’ll work around the clock until the last customers are restored,” the utility provider said. “More than 104,000 of 174,000 impacted customers in central and Western New York have had service restored after a wintry mix of rain and snow, and winds exceeding 70 mph impacted the regions. The weather caused downed wires, trees, tree limbs, pole damage and other hazards.”
