Silver Creek expects multi-year Buffalo Street project

SILVER CREEK -- A familiar topic came up again at a recent Village Board meeting in Silver Creek.
Three residents of Buffalo Street attended a recent meeting to ask for an update on the plans to address the road.
Warren Kelly spoke to the Board for the second time regarding the matter within the last five months. He and Paul Bogosian, who also attended the recent meeting, each spoke previously in September. Kelly said previously that the group was "concerned with the condition of Buffalo Street -- the road, the pavement, the drains, and the curbs."
At the recent meeting, Kelly asked for the Village's next steps regarding the process. He asked if the Village planned to hire an engineer to evaluate the area and urged the Board to use funds in the current budget to get the project started.
Kelly said previously, "We know that it needs to be done right when it's done."
Mayor Jeff Hornburg said that he believes the village has some funds available to allocate for an engineer to evaluate the road. A quote from an engineer has not yet been sought by the Village as of early February. The Village is awaiting a response from its audit from last year, at which point leftover funds may be transferred to allocate for the project.
"It is on our radar," Hornburg said. "I think this will be a two-plus-year project."
The village also entertained comments from Hanover Town Supervisor Lou Pelletter, who also serves as Silver Creek Village Historian. Pelletter asked if the Village planned to agree to the terms listed in the Enhanced Police Protection Contract through the Town of Hanover and the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office.
Pelletter renegotiated the contract from a one-year pact to a two-year agreement, with substantial savings to the Town and Village. Hornburg stated, "It was a good thing that you did to get it reduced."
Pelletter then expressed his desire to set up a meeting between the village of Silver Creek and the Town of Hanover to discuss the upcoming eclipse with local disaster coordinators. Pelletter also hopes to schedule a meeting between the Village and the Town to further discuss shared services.
Also of note, the Silver Creek Fire Department responded to 50 calls during the month of January, including 39 Emergency Medical Service calls and two motor vehicle accidents. Mayor Hornburg commended the Fire Department, EMS squad, and the Fire Police for their efforts.
Trustee Sandra Lindstrom highlighted that Hanover Youth Basketball will begin on Feb. 27. The program runs through March 30, and is open to students in the Silver Creek and Forestville school districts in grades 1-6.
The next mobile food pantry event is Feb. 27, beginning at 11 a.m., at the Village Municipal Building parking lot. The event is sponsored by FeedMore of WNY, the Silver Creek Food Pantry, and the Village of Silver Creek. The village is seeking volunteers to help distribute the items, which are available to all in need, without income restrictions. Contact the Village Clerk's office at (716) 934-3240 for more information.
The next regular meeting of the Silver Creek Village Board is March 4, as the meeting scheduled for Feb. 19 was canceled due to Presidents' Day.
