John “Doc” Hamels and the studio crew were recognized by NYS Senator George Borrello on the 500th episode of “Chautauqua Sunrise” with a senatorial proclamation.

The show began production in July 5, 2014 and has continuously aired since covering numerous topics concerning the daily lives of the residents of Chautauqua County. The show was more or less a spinoff of the Senior Report with Reed Powers which aired on Cable 5 for over 900 episodes.

Hamels had been a guest, sub host and eventually Powers’ partner for three years. Sadly, upon his passing, Hamels took over the time slot and took a different approach to the 9 a.m. Saturday slot.

“Producing and hosting this show has been a true labor of love and I have learned so much about the people, communities and wonderful opportunities we have here in Chautauqua County. This is not a one-person operation. I have had a dedicated volunteer crew who has been with me for the ride: Chuck Kelsey, station manager, Chris Burt, program director, Jeff Zook, head engineer, Justin Burt and Emerald Wiech, camera techs and Randy Burt, cameraman and phone operator.”

Presently the show is aired on Spectrum 1301, Saturday mornings from 9 to 10 a.m., again at 2 and 8 p.m. daily. The show is streamed live around the world during the Saturday morning program reaching across the USA, Europe and a number of other countries. Through a handshake agreement with the former WRFA radio manager, Dennis Drew with Hamels, the show’s audio is broadcast Tuesdays at 1 p.m. on 107.9 in Jamestown.

“I am so very proud of our ‘hometown feel’ that we have created and we take our responsibility of sharing events, programs and various topics (the good with the sad) very seriously.”

Borrello and Hamels agreed that Borrello would be his 500th guest some time ago and then made a remarkable deal that once again Borrello would appear as a special 1,000th. To which Hamels commented, “Well, I guess we won’t be going anywhere soon!”

Starting at $3.50/week.
