Historic collection of artifacts donated to city museum

At left is Gail Pugh Dash, vice president of the Chautauqua County Genealogical Society, with Kristin. D. White, director of the Dunkirk Historical Society Museum.

The Protected Home Circle was a Fraternal Organization organized in Sharon, Pa. The organization pooled its members money to provide death insurance to its families. A Chapter of the PHC was organized in Dunkirk. The lot of artifacts was purchased at an estate sale at the Long Family home at the corners of Courtney and Franklin Avenue in Dunkirk, by Kevin and Sandy Budniewski of Laona.

Gail Dash, through her association with the Chautauqua County Genealogical Society, was given the collection of items to organize, research and document the items and donate them to the Dunkirk Historical Society on behalf of the Budniewski family.

The membership Charter of the Junior Protected Home Circle in Dunkirk, is being held by Gail Dash. It was presented by the Supreme President, S H Hadley, at Sharon, Pa., on August 15, 1935.

Kristin D. White, Director of the Dunkirk Historical Society Museum, hold the pins designating the offices of the adult members of the PHC. The suitcase, original to the organization, contains a “game of flags of countries of the world”, at that time. There are ritual books and song books also.

Anyone having further information on the Protected Home Circle can contact White at the Dunkirk Historical Society Museum.
