Garden Club marks 100 years in village

Members of the Fredonia Garden Club will be doing a communitywide celebration on June 15.

Members of the Fredonia Garden Club met for dinner recently at the Colony Restaurant in Irving. This special recognition dinner was held in celebration of the Club’s Centennial Anniversary in 2024.

Fourteen members and a special guest, Marcia Becker, representing the Eighth District of Federated Garden Clubs of New York State, were in attendance.

Following dinner, a beautifully decorated cake, provided by The Cakery of Fredonia, was served for dessert. Fresh flower centerpieces arranged by member, Kim Woodward, adorned the table and were awarded to three lucky winners at the end of the evening. Members also shared their heartfelt thoughts of what Garden Club means to them.

The Fredonia Garden Club was founded in March of 1924 by a group of nine women who were interested in gardening, both ancient and modern.

The meeting was held at the home of Mrs. Frank Darling of Forest Place. Mrs. Alice Eddy was elected as the Club’s first President. In 1927 with a membership of 22, the Garden Club began their efforts to beautify the Village of Fredonia with plantings along Forest Place, Canadaway Creek, and the Main Street bridge.

Members of the Fredonia Garden Club will be doing a communitywide celebration on June 15.

These efforts continue today with various beautification projects throughout the village.

Plans are underway for a communitywide celebration to be held on Saturday, June 15, from noon to 4 p.m. in Fredonia Barker Commons.
