Silver Creek budget hearing set for April 15

SILVER CREEK — Residents of the Village of Silver Creek will soon have their chance to speak on the proposed budget for the 2024-25 fiscal year.

The village will hold a public hearing at its next regular meeting, Monday, April 15, at 7 p.m. at the Village Hall to discuss the preliminary 2024-25 Village Budget. The preliminary budget will be available for viewing at the Village Clerk’s office beginning April 10. Discussions will continue through May 1 after public feedback is heard before the budget is officially adopted.

At its most recent meeting, County Legislator Tom Harmon thanked the Board on behalf of the Silver Creek Kiwanis Club for allowing its annual Easter egg hunt and festivities. Harmon also noted that the Kiwanis Club is in the final stages of its refurbishment of the Rix Place basketball court in Silver Creek.

“It looks fantastic,” Harmon said. “I think it was a great thing we did for the community, and I want to keep working with the Village, working with the Town to come up with ideas for the community that are going to benefit all the kids in the area.”

The Village previously approved $6,000 to be spent on the court’s refurbishment. The Town of Hanover also pledged its support. “We’re very happy they are interested in doing it, and we’re also happy to assist in making it come to light,” Hornburg said at the time of the payment’s approval.

At its recent meeting, the Village also approved a partnership with Chautauqua County Soil and Water to address a project along the shore of Walnut Creek.

The Village office will be closed today due to the total solar eclipse. Village employees are awarded the day off from work, while being asked to remain on call for a potential emergency. The Town of Hanover has done the same with its employees and its Town Hall and Court. Mayor Jeff Hornburg expressed his comfort surrounding the event with the increased staffing from the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office.

“I hope Village residents are preparing for the influx of traffic,” Village Trustee Marv Cummings said.

Cummings, who works as a Dispatcher for the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office, noted that the County Emergency Medical Services have “done an excellent job” preparing residents of the County for the event and the days leading up to it. “It’s going to be a crazy weekend. I think the Village is going to see a lot of traffic moving through,” Cummings said. “… Be safe and be prepared.”
