A pinwheel planting ceremony happened Wednesday afternoon at Dunkirk City Hall, in recognition of Family Strength and Support Month in Chautauqua County.

The month is dedicated to acknowledging the vital role families play in nurturing and safeguarding children. The month-long observance, also designated as Child Abuse Prevention Month, underscores the importance of shielding children from harm and bolstering familial support systems.

Chautauqua County spearheads the annual Pinwheel for Prevention initiative, adorning the landscape with pinwheel gardens. These events symbolize the essence of childhood — hope, health, and happiness — while serving as icons of child abuse prevention.

Dunkirk’s event, the final of three pinwheel plantings in the county, featured city officials and child abuse prevention workers. Dunkirk Mayor Kate Wdowiasz read a proclamation of Child Abuse Prevenetion Month in the city.
