Two new solar farms seek hearings in town

OBSERVER Photo by Braden Carmen Town of Dunkirk Board member Shari Miller previously raised concerns about semi-trucks traveling on East Williams Street in the Town. The issue still remains, despite the Town’s efforts to post the road.

In the month of March, the Town of Dunkirk collected more than $20,000 in zoning fees. More could be on the way if two more potential projects proceed.

Zoning and Code Enforcement Officer Ryan Mourer reported the Town has recently been approached by two new solar energy system companies who have begun to survey land in the Town for potential projects. One property on Brigham Road was recently surveyed, separate from the current solar energy project already approved on Brigham Road. The other property eyed for a potential project is located on Willow Road.

Regarding both properties in question, Mourer was not notified prior to the surveys being conducted. He was notified of the activity by nearby homeowners. Both companies have since requested a hearing for their potential projects in the month of May.

The Town will also be holding two informational meetings for residents pertaining to the Shorewood Water and Sewer District capital improvement project in the coming weeks. The first meeting is set for May 8 at 5 p.m., with the second meeting set for June 12 at 5 p.m., both at the West Town of Dunkirk Fire Hall next to the Town Hall and Court.

An engineer will be present to answer questions from residents impacted by the project. The Town is pursuing grant funding for the project, which requires multiple easements to complete. Easement request letters have been mailed to property owners impacted.

The Town is also working to limit semi-truck traffic on East Williams Street, an issue that has been raised several times at previous meetings, including by Town Board member Shari Miller prior to being elected to the Board.

“A lot has been done since it was brought to our attention, little things along the way, and still, the semis go down there,” Dunkirk Town Supervisor Priscilla Penfold said.

The street is now posted with a weight limit sign, but there have still been violators of the weight restriction in recent weeks.

The next regular meeting of the Town Board is set for May 21 at 5:30 p.m. at the Dunkirk Town Hall and Court.
