Bridge repair meeting set in Town of Dunkirk

OBSERVER Photo by Braden Carmen Dunkirk Town Highway Superintendent Jeff Feinen informed the Town Board in February that the State Department of Transportation was in the “engineering phase” of replacing the bridge over Canadaway Creek on Route 5.

The town of Dunkirk will soon welcome state representatives to share more about an upcoming project set approximately a year from now.

The New York state Department of Transportation has set a public information meeting for May 22, from 4 to 6 p.m., at the Town of Dunkirk Hall and Court to discuss the replacement of the bridge over Canadaway Creek on Route 5, beginning in the summer of 2025. The bridge replacement is labeled by the DOT as Project No. 5134.53.

In February, Dunkirk Town Highway Superintendent Jeff Feinen informed the Town Board that the New York State Department of Transportation was in the “engineering phase” of replacing the bridge over Canadaway Creek on Route 5. At that point, Feinen had not yet heard an exact date as to when the construction would begin or what the detour plans would be. Two residents attended a Town Board meeting last month to inquire about the project, as well, but the Board was unaware of the DOT’s plans at that time.

The DOT encourages any nearby resident to attend the meeting to ask any questions they may have. The meeting will be an open house format. A sign language interpreter or accommodations for any special needs can be arranged by contacting NYSDOT Regional Structures Engineer Kelly Schuman at (716) 847-5243 prior to the date of the meeting.
