Cummings resigns from Silver Creek Board

SILVER CREEK — Mayor Jeff Hornburg is now without his “go-to guy.” Marv Cummings has resigned from his duties as Deputy Mayor and Trustee of the Village of Silver Creek, effective immediately.

“I have truly enjoyed my time serving the residents of this fine village, and additionally enjoyed working with Mayor Hornburg and the rest of the Board,” Cummings said in his letter of resignation. He also thanked the “hardworking employees of the village” for all that they do, and stated his resignation came with “deep regrets.”

The Silver Creek Village Board was caught off guard by his sudden resignation. Hornburg described the decision as “a shock to me.” Cummings later told the OBSERVER the decision was necessary because he is no longer a Village resident.

“It’s big shoes that we’re going to have to try to fill,” Hornburg said. Hornburg stated he will miss Cummings “immensely.”

Trustee Bill Barnes also said that he will miss serving with Cummings on the Board. Trustee Kathy Tampio added, “Marv was a big asset to this community. We will miss him on this Board.”

Cummings took on several responsibilities throughout his time on the Board, none more so than coordinating the Music in the Park concert series each summer. Hornburg specifically highlighted his work with Music in the Park after accepting his resignation.

A seasoned high school basketball referee and baseball umpire, Cummings was also invested in improving the Village Ball Park. Cummings also played a role in coordinating other events, such as the Village’s involvement with the Festival of Grapes.

Cummings noted his respect for Hornburg as a leader after his resignation. He also noted that he will miss his role with the Village, and that he “made some lifelong friends along the way.”

The town of Dunkirk will soon welcome state representatives to share more about an upcoming project set approximately a year from now.

The New York state Department of Transportation has set a public information meeting for May 22, from 4 to 6 p.m., at the Town of Dunkirk Hall and Court to discuss the replacement of the bridge over Canadaway Creek on Route 5, beginning in the summer of 2025. The bridge replacement is labeled by the DOT as Project No. 5134.53.

In February, Dunkirk Town Highway Superintendent Jeff Feinen informed the Town Board that the New York State Department of Transportation was in the “engineering phase” of replacing the bridge over Canadaway Creek on Route 5. At that point, Feinen had not yet heard an exact date as to when the construction would begin or what the detour plans would be. Two residents attended a Town Board meeting last month to inquire about the project, as well, but the Board was unaware of the DOT’s plans at that time.

The DOT encourages any nearby resident to attend the meeting to ask any questions they may have. The meeting will be an open house format. A sign language interpreter or accommodations for any special needs can be arranged by contacting NYSDOT Regional Structures Engineer Kelly Schuman at (716) 847-5243 prior to the date of the meeting.
