Central Avenue changes proposed

Plans for new striping and curbing on Central Avenue were laid out by a GoBike Buffalo official last week at a Fredonia Board of Trustees workshop.

Brendan Seney, GoBike Buffalo’s planning director, spoke remotely about the upcoming project. He said it’s the product of “several months of work with the mayor and other stakeholders in the village, including police, DPW and others as well.” It also comes out of community outreach by GoBike last fall, including a survey about Central Avenue.

Seney said the project is “primarily meant to enhance the existing bike lanes,” adding hash marks to the buffer zone between the vehicle travel lane and the bike lane, and painting green bike warning markers on intersections. Some pedestrian-friendly “bumpouts” are also planned.

The project is supposed to start north of Maple Avenue and run to the city of Dunkirk border. Seney said GoBike’s design plans for both the city and the village will be on display at Thursday’s Music in the Pier in Dunkirk, along with a future Fredonia Farmers’ Market.

In Fredonia, the project’s street marking “should get you to your next street paving, which… will be in around two years,” Seney said. “So this is really kind of a trial period. This summer, once it’s implemented, we’ll give folks a few weeks to adjust to the change. We’ll survey folks to get us kind of a qualitative understanding of how people are experiencing it, but also put out our speed and volume equipment” to measure changes in traffic patterns.

Seney held out the possibility of a similar project south of Maple Avenue after Central Avenue is repaved. He said it’s “beyond the scope of the project” now.

Village officials, while supportive of GoBike’s plans, want the Fredonia Planning Board to offer its seal of approval.

Starting at $2.99/week.
