JAMESTOWN — A Jamestown man was arraigned Monday morning on an eight-count indictment connected to the death of an eight-month-old.

Chautauqua County District Attorney Jason Schmidt announced Sean Thomas, 26, was charged with second-degree murder and other crimes related to the death of Aniyah Turk.

Thomas is accused of intentionally strangling and shaking Aniyah on April 22 and earlier, which caused catastrophic and unrecoverable injuries requiring her hospitalization on life support until she eventually succumbed to her injuries in May.

“This is the second indictment arising from two baby deaths occurring in the city of Jamestown in April,” Schmidt says. “It comes as the result of a comprehensive investigation conducted by investigators and juvenile detectives of Jamestown Police Department. Their efforts and professionalism deserve special recognition.”

At his arraignment, Chautauqua County Court held Thomas on bail of $1 million cash or, in the alternative, a $2 million property bond. He is due back in Court in July for further pretrial proceedings.

Earlier this month, A Chautauqua County Grand Jury handed up an indictment charging Matthew E. Nuttall, 26, with first- and second-degree manslaughter after the death of a 16-month-old in April.

Jamestown police were notified April 15 of a suspicious death of a child that occurred April 13 in the city. An investigation showed Nuttall allegedly caused the death of Isaac Benton by blunt force trauma.

Nuttal allegedly threw the child into a Pack-and-Play portable crib because he was frustrated the baby wouldn’t stop crying. The child’s spinal cord was severed, which caused the child’s death.
