Field of Dreams sign vote doesn’t happen

Dunkirk’s city council removed an item to purchase a new Field of Dreams sign for Wright Park last month, with little explanation.

Councilman-at-Large Nick Weiser said the resolution was on the agenda due to a “misunderstanding.” Councilmember Natalie Luczkowiak sponsored the resolution, which called for using the Bill Cease city recreation fund to pay for the sign. The Dunkirk diner owner willed money to the city to start a fund for strictly recreational uses, upon his death in the 1970s.

The council voted 4-0 to remove the item. Council member Nancy Nichols was not present.

The Field of Dreams sign welcomed visitors to Wright Park baseball fields, but was damaged in a 2023 storm and removed. City officials said a new sign is needed because the old one is beyond repair.

Luczkowiak and Mayor Kate Wdowiasz got into a dispute over use of the Cease fund for the sign. Wdowiasz asserted there wasn’t enough money valuable, while Luczkowiak said there was plenty.

Luczkowiak said last week the resolution was mistakenly put on the agenda. She didn’t want to get into details about the situation.

She did say that a private effort is underway to get a new sign.

Starting at $3.50/week.
