Girl Scout projects benefit region
Girl Scout Troop 20237 ended their scouting year with two community service projects that will benefit many in Chautauqua County. The girls held the second of two book collections this May. The gently used books were used to fill several Little Libraries across the Dunkirk, Fredonia and Brocton areas, including the first one created in the county on Park Avenue in Dunkirk by Risha Formanowicz in memory of her late husband, John. Some of the girls remembered her as their school nurse, before she retired from School 4. The troop left behind a box of books for Formanowicz to fill her library as needed. It was such a successful project that the girls decided to continue with it in the fall. Troop 20237 also purchased items from their cookie sale profits to assemble a dozen backpacks for the Chautauqua County foster care program. The girls choose this agency, because one of their members was cared for and adopted from the foster care program as an infant. The backpacks included age-appropriate items like socks, deodorant, toys, books, crayons, hairbrushes, journals and handmade fleece blankets. They are grateful for the donation of dental hygiene products from Dr. Russell DiPalma and stuffed dogs from Purina which were also put in each backpack. The troops invited Mrs. Laurie Dolce to an earlier troop meeting to give the girls guidance on what would be appropriate items for the backpacks and how the agency will be distributing them. The girls made shopping lists, bought the items, made the blankets and filled the backpacks before inviting Mrs. Dolce back to pick them up. The troop also gave her a donation of Girl Scout cookies to share with her co-workers for all they do for the children.
