Staffing updates heard at city district
Mark Frazier offered an update about Dunkirk City School District staffing during a recent meeting of the city Board of Education.
“We have hired 14 new members of the Dunkirk Teachers Association for the upcoming school year,” the district’s human resources director said. CSEA is providing 10 new employees in buildings and grounds, and for clerical, teacher’s aide and cleaning work.
The Board of Education hired five people at the meeting. Mary Conklin and Carolyn Williams were hired as elementary education teachers for the intermediate school. Todd Fiore was brought in as a secondary school science teacher and Steven Mackey will take a special education teacher position at the secondary school. Finally, Aracelis Torres was hired as a School 3 library aide.
The district currently has 4.5 openings. There are two special education positions open, and a school counselor and a library media specialist are also sought. The 0.5 comes from a part-time physical therapist.
Frazier acknowledged the district had hit a “dead end” in hiring for the physical therapist and the counselor positions. However, the other three positions should be filled, with candidates slated for interviews.
There are seven teacher’s aides and two school monitor openings. Frazier said interviews were imminent.
On the administrative side, the assistant director of special education is still open. Frazier said interviews are set up for that position, too.
Superintendent Michael Mansfield introduced two new secondary school administrators. Michael Brown is principal of teaching and learning, and Brian Swatland is director of secondary education.
Brown comes to the Dunkirk school district from Tonawanda’s district, while Swatland was most recently at Williamsville’s school district.
