SILVER CREEK — The Village Board shared a common stance at a recent meeting: the 57th annual Festival of Grapes this past weekend was a success.

“I didn’t hear a negative comment the whole weekend,” Mayor Jeff Hornburg said.

Trustee Sandra Lindstrom expressed gratitude for all those who helped the festival come together. “Thank you to the Grape Festival, the organizers and the volunteers. I think they did a phenomenal job, and I, too, did not hear anything negative.”

Trustee Bill Barnes noted the parade attendance surpassed what it has been in recent years. He joked about how much candy the Village went through passing it out to all the children watching the parade.

The Festival of Grapes was held a week earlier than it usually is each year to accommodate for amusement rides. Village Trustee Kathy Tampio commended Town of Hanover Supervisor Lou Pelletter for his efforts in securing the rides this year, which had been missing from the event in recent years.

“He did a lot of work to help organize and obtain an amusement company. I heard a lot of good comments about the rides that were for adults, little kids, and in between. I think everybody had a wonderful time,” Tampio said.

The next notable event in the Village is the fourth annual Stop 22 Walkathon, which will be on Saturday, Oct. 12, beginning at 10 a.m. through the village streets. The walk will begin and end at Post 6472.

The event, which was authorized by the Village Board at a recent meeting, is organized by the Silver Creek VFW Auxiliary Post 6472. Silver Creek VFW Auxiliary Post 6472 President Deanna Borrello attended the recent meeting to request permission from the Board. Borrello has helped organize the event since its inception.

“We encourage all organizations within our community to try to participate by marching with us,” Borrello said.

The route is designed to last approximately 22 minutes. The number 22 holds significance because 22 veterans are lost to suicide each day, according to states that report veteran suicide rates. The month of October is highlighted by the VFW overseers at the state level as a time to raise awareness for the issue of veteran suicide.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. on the morning of the event, Oct. 12. Registration costs and donations made at the event will benefit suicide prevention efforts.

Starting at $3.50/week.
