Hero Banner Committee initiative looks ahead
Dunkirk’s Hero Banner Committee will soon consider a third round of the popular lightpost hangings that honor veterans.
City Councilperson Natalie Luczkowiak, who has led the project, spoke about it at a Common Council meeting last week.
“The committee will be meeting soon and making decisions going forward. We have a lot of ideas. Please know anyone who wishes to have a banner will eventually be able to,” she said.
“However, because of our variable weather, we won’t be able to keep them up until Veterans Day, Nov. 11,” Luczkowiak added. There are a total of 222 banners.
There was some controversy at the start of the banner-hanging season when the city originally said it would not have all of the Hero Banners up by Memorial Day. After pressure from Luczkowiak and others — and a $3,000 donation for parks department overtime from the Hero Banner Committee — Dunkirk did manage to get them up by Memorial Day.
