‘Commitment’ to safety: CLCS students learn how to be prepared

Members of the newly formed North Lake Fire District speak with children about fire safety in October at Chautauqua Lake Central School.

The Chautauqua Lake school partnered with members of the local fire departments to offer fire safety instruction to students in the elementary grades.

Each year during October’s National Fire Safety Week, children in grades Pre-K through two attend demonstrations where they learn what to do in case of a house fire.

Firefighters show students how to safely maneuver in the event of a fire, and help them become more comfortable approaching the sight and sounds of a firefighter in full gear.

Former Dewittville Volunteer Fire Chief Burl Swanson shared, “Our kids get additional fire safety training but also traffic safety, poison safety, bicycle safety, first aid training and other safety practices. There is no doubt that this training helps our goal of no incidents involving a child.”

Following the presentations, students from Pre-K through grade six tour an assortment of fire trucks and other emergency vehicles in the school’s parking lot.

Elementary Principal Megan Lundgren states, “Our students are so much better prepared for emergencies because of the exposure and instruction they receive from our local volunteer firefighters each year. The program would not be what it is without the unwavering commitment from Burl Swanson, former Dewittville Volunteer Fire Chief and volunteer for the Chautauqua Children’s Safety Village.”

Chautauqua Lake Superintendent Josh Liddell shared, “This annual event has truly become something our teachers, students, and local firefighters look forward to each year. It’s inspiring to see all of our local fire departments come together in support of our students.

This marks one of the first community events for the newly combined North Lake Fire District, which includes the former Hartfield, Dewittville, and Mayville fire departments.”

Starting at $2.99/week.
