Main St. closure OK’d for Wells work
A portion of Dunkirk’s Main Street is officially going to get closed.
The stretch next to Wells Enterprises’ ice cream plant, from Newton to Marsden streets, will get blocked off. It’s supposed to help out Wells’ multimillion-dollar expansion project.
Dunkirk’s Common Council voted unanimously Wednesday to close the street, after tabling a previous vote to do so in order to gather more information.
The resolution passed by council shuts off the street until May 1, 2026. It’s supposed to be blocked by movable barricades so first responders, such as the police and fire departments, can more easily get through if needed.
A detour will be set up using Marsden and Newton streets and Washington Avenue.
As of Friday morning, Main Street was still open. “Wells will do some paving at the Main and Marsden intersection to facilitate large truck turns for one, and the detour signs have to be installed by Comet Flasher,” said Randy Woodbury, city Department of Public Works director.
