City school hail aid hike with vote today

Positive news about state aid highlighted Dunkirk City School District Superintendent Michael Mansfield’s Board of Education report last week. He also reminded about the budget vote, which is set for today.

“Foundation aid was a little better than what we anticipated,” Mansfield said. “Some increases for students with disabilities and ENL (English as a New Language) students helped us there.”

School districts had their 2025-26 aid finalized when the New York State Legislature finally approved a budget May 9, more than a month after the state was supposed to approve its annual spending plan.

Mansfield went on to talk about the district’s annual budget vote, which is today. It’s set for noon to 8 p.m. in the auxiliary gym at Dunkirk Junior/Senior High School.

Voters must be at least 18 years of age and a resident of the school district for at least 30 days, and are asked to bring some form of identification.

Dunkirk voters will decide on a 2025-26 budget, two Board of Education seats, and a proposed capital reserve fund.

Mansfield noted that the budget proposal contains no tax increase.

The superintendent went on to mention that the new “Dunkirk Through the Decades” athletic hallway will be dedicated 5 p.m. June 5. A website associated with the hallway is up and running.

A “signing day” for senior athletes with college scholarships will follow the June 5 ceremony.

Starting at $3.50/week.
