Fredonia among those fined for water reporting violations

Even municipalities must follow state regulations when it comes to reporting water quality.

During the Chautauqua County Board of Health meeting, it was announced that the village of Fredonia had been cited and fined for public water supply violations.

The violations were not connected to the village’s water source coming from its reservoir and water plant, which the village has been exploring options to either upgrade or get its water from Lake Erie.

According to documentation provided, Fredonia failed to submit results of the Principal Organic Contaminants monitoring for their public water supply for the third quarter of 2024.

Fredonia also failed to submit results of minimum Inorganic Chemical Contaminants monitoring requirements for 2024.

The village was fined $200, which it has since paid.

Jessica Wuerstle, the county’s Director of Environmental Health, discussed the citations. “It was standard samples that they should have completed from the (water) plant,” she said.

Wuerstle said the village has since taken the samples, submitted them for monitoring and everything came back safe.

Fredonia was the only municipality issued a citation, but there were a number of other businesses that were cited and fined for public water violations.

Those included:

– Basil & Bones on Foote Avenue, Jamestown failed to submit results of necessary biological monitoring for the fourth quarter of 2024 and failed to complete necessary Nitrate monitoring for 2024. They were fined $600.

– Drybrook Mobile Home Park on Poland Center Road, Kennedy failed to submit results of biological monitoring for the fourth quarter of 2024. They were fined $100.

– Sweeteye Estates on Southwestern Drive, Jamestown and Lake Erie Estates on East Main Road, Fredonia both failed to submit results of necessary biological monitoring for February 2025. They were both fined $200.

– Stow Cottages at Chautauqua on Stow Ferry Road, Ashville failed to complete necessary Nitrate monitoring for 2024. They were fined $100.

Along with public water violations, Wuerstle announced one body art program violation.

Joseph Braedan Van Ord, doing business as Unity Tattoo and Art Studio on Foote Avenue, Jamestown was cited for not having a valid body art establishment permit.

Wuerstle said that both the permit for the business, as well as the artist’s permit had expired.

The business was fined $250.
