A large sinkhole opened up at the intersection of Central Avenue and Second Street Monday afternoon, closing the road indefinitely. Later in the day, flooding was reported in Fredonia.
A National Weather Service spotter located less than a mile from Fredonia recorded 2.01 inches of rain Monday. A spotter in the village reported 1.18 inches. Here’s some reports from other local rainfall spotters: Forestville, 1.77 inches; Lakewood, 0.91 inches; the town of Westfield, 0.86 inches.
The Fredonia flooding was the worst in a neighborhood near Canadaway Creek including Burnett, Gardner, and Johnson streets, Mayor Michael Ferguson reported in a Facebook post Monday night. However, he said village personnel were “dispatched throughout the village dealing with various flooding issues.”
Department of Public Works Director Randy Woodbury said Tuesday morning that the “sinkhole is under control and should be repaired soon.”

Monday’s rain offered a climax to days of soggy weather. The rain likely led to a very visible problem the day before on Sunday, the collapse of part of Pioneer Cemetery’s new wall on East Main Street in Fredonia.
Pomfret Town Supervisor Dan Pacos got back to OBSERVER about the situation Tuesday morning. “No comments at this time, other than to say that our architects and engineers will be taking a look at it today to see what may have caused it, and to determine what the correct fix will be,” he said.
