Roswell official visits Cassadaga following donation

CASSADAGA – For the second year in a row, the owners and customers of 3 Lakes Cafe are doing their part to “redeem the day.”

Last year, 3 Lakes Cafe opened on Memorial Day. The owners, Abi and Jake Landean, chose to donate all the proceeds that day to Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center in Buffalo.

On April 13, 2022 Abi’s father Nate Bailey discovered he had metastasized melanoma. He had five brain tumors. There was also a lesion on his lung, which eventually was discovered to be cancerous as well.

He has been getting treatments at Roswell regularly. Although the Sinclairville resident has not been declared “cancer free,” he has essentially recovered, with Roswell continuing to monitor his tumors.

In addition, Jake’s mother who lives in the Rochester area was treated at Roswell for cervical cancer. She has been declared cancer free.

A year after Bailey’s initial diagnosis, he invited his friends and family to do something to bless others every April 13, calling it “Redeem the day,” which comes from the Bible, Ephesians 5:16.

This year for Redeem the Day, 3 Lakes Cafe had a “Round Up for Roswell” for the month of April where customers could round up their purchase and donate to the cancer center.

Around $750 was collected and 3 Lakes Cafe decided to “round up” the amount to $1,000.

As part of their giving over the last two years, 3 Lakes Cafe invited Dr. Igor Puzanov to come to their restaurant.

Dr. Puzanov is the Senior Vice President of Clinical Investigation at Roswell and is the chief of the Melanoma Section in Roswell’s Department of Medicine.

He was personally involved in treating Bailey and was able to find time in his schedule to visit the Cassadaga coffee shop.

The Landeans posted about his scheduled visit on Facebook and some of the people he had treated came by to thank him in person.

In addition, while at the coffee shop Dr. Puzanov learned a little bit about life behind the counter. “He hung out with us for a while and then we showed him how to make lattes. He made his own latte. I was teaching him latte art, so that was a lot of fun,” Abi said.

The Landeans haven’t decided yet if they will donate to Roswell for a third time next year, but no matter what, they will be doing something to give back to the community and “redeem the day.”

Starting at $3.50/week.
