“We do have a speed limit of 30 mph,” Roberta Belote stated. “And the ones who are obeying the speed limit are the residents in Bear Lake. However, there is a lot of through traffic that goes faster than that and the road is very narrow; there’s a lot of people up there that are walkers.”
Their concern is that with the summer season arriving, most of their lakefront property makes them have to cross the road. They’re worried about the residents who have children and grandchildren there and that the youth are not looking for cars, which makes for a dangerous situation.
“We’re just here because we’re concerned about the safety of the residents, their children and their grandchildren,” Belote shared. “Many of us have called the state police and the Sheriff’s Department, but they’re busy and can’t always check. It’s a big county.”
Bear Lake is located in the town of Pomfret as well as a portion of the town of Stockton.

Another resident, Chris McQuiggan, cited a number of dogs, geese and other wildlife that venture close to the road. One resident also spoke about a visually impaired man that walks his dog on the road and the possible danger he is in.
“Sometimes there’s as many as 10 people walking (on) the road and those cars don’t care,” McQuiggan added.
Belote noted there’s not much of a shoulder either so it takes them a while to get out of the way.
The residents were hoping that the board might be able to place additional signage or possibly speed bumps for the summer season at least in hopes of slowing down the additional traffic.
The board proposed possibly placing a digital speed tracking sign to warn motorists of pedestrians while also discussing the item with the sheriff’s office to possibly incur more patrols.
