Silver Creek hears pitch for waterfront program
SILVER CREEK — Earlier this month, Silver Creek was next on the list for representatives from Chautauqua County to visit as the county’s Local Waterfront Revitalization Program (LWRP) continues to move forward. The Village Board entertained a presentation from Senior Planner Courtney Domst at a recent meeting.
Domst discussed the benefits of an approved LWRP, which is focused on collaboration between multiple levels of government and a defined vision for the community with input from stakeholders. An approved LWRP can increase grant funding opportunities for projects pertaining to the development of the defined waterfront area.
Chautauqua County began designing an LWRP in 2015, at which point 10 communities were included in one document. New York State changed its requirements since then, now requiring individual plans for eight of the communities, with the town and village of Westfield combined into one plan, as well as the village of Silver Creek and the town of Hanover combined into one plan.
Among the targeted projects in Silver Creek include upgrading the wastewater treatment plant; flood mitigation efforts and drainage upgrades throughout the village; upgrades to George Borrello Park; improvements to the ballpark; and increased fishing access to Walnut Creek off Route 20.
“In my opinion, it’s going along as good as any state function does, slowly. But it is moving forward and hopefully we come to completion,” Mayor Jeff Hornburg said.
The Village Board is also looking forward to July 13, as the Jamestown Tarp Skunks baseball team will be hosting a game at Diethrick Park to honor the legacy of Howard Ehmke. Tickets will be available at the Village Hall and the Hanover Town Hall and Court.
Born in 1894, Ehmke, a Silver Creek native, spent 15 years in Major League Baseball from 1915-1930. He won the 1929 World Series as the Game 1 starter of the series for the Philadelphia Athletics. Ehmke won 166 games and registered more than 1,000 strikeouts in his career. He also threw a no-hitter on Sept. 7, 1923. Ehmke later started a company that made tarps to protect baseball diamonds from the rain.
The next Mobile Food Pantry event, sponsored by the Silver Creek Food Pantry, the Village of Silver Creek, and Feedmore WNY, will be on Tuesday, June 24, from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., at the village municipal parking lot. The event is free of charge to residents of Silver Creek and other nearby communities.
The next meeting of the Silver Creek Village Board is Monday, June 16.
