“I’m excited about the school” Hornburg said. “… At least it’s moving. I’ve been waiting 10 years for that.”
Like many others in the village, Hornburg has been anticipating the demolition of the school for the better part of the past decade. Now that demolition has begun, the building’s days are finally numbered. Hornburg believes the building could potentially be fully demolished by the end of June, but it is possible that timeline stretches into early July.
“I don’t care as long as it’s gone,” Hornburg said. “As long as it keeps coming down, I’m not going to complain a bit.”
Southern Tier Environments for Living, Inc. (STEL) plans to construct a new 54-unit apartment senior living community, for residents ages 62 years and older, at the site of the former school following its demolition. The new building will be comprised of 51 single-bedroom units and three two-bedroom units.

Architects for the new building have been in contact with Hornburg, as well as Hanover Supervisor Lou Pelletter, the village historian, about a display at the new structure once completed to preserve parts of the old building.
One surprise during the demolition was the discovery of original art along one of the beams, which the village is interested in preserving.
