Officers bust man for alleged violent break-in

Dunkirk Police arrested a man early Saturday morning after an alleged violent break-in.

The police report that “at approximately 12:06 a.m., officers responded to an address on East Seventh Street for a burglary in progress. It was reported that the suspect had forcefully entered the residence and assaulted a female at the location. While enroute it was relayed to officers that the suspect had fled the residence on a bicycle.

“Officers then located the suspect, Santos M. Almestica, age 35 of Dunkirk, and took him into custody. Almestica struggled with officers once in custody, and attempted to kick the patrol vehicle windows out. Almestica continued being disorderly once transported to headquarters, refusing to comply with officers’ commands. Almestica then damaged and shattered a door window at the police station.

“After further investigation it was determined Almestica forcefully entered the victim’s residence by damaging the front door. Almestica then assaulted the victim. An active order of protection was also in place directing Almestica to stay away from the victim and her residence.”

Almestica was charged with second-degree burglary, first-degree criminal contempt, three counts of fourth-degree criminal mischief, and second-degree harassment.

He was later arraigned and remanded to Chautauqua County Jail on $50,000 bail.
