Camp Gross honors Forbes in ceremony

Family members of Alona Forbes gather around the rock dedicated Saturday at Camp Gross.
CASSADAGA — The Camp Gross Foundation hosted a Rock Dedication Ceremony on Saturday at the entrance to Camp Gross to honor the late Alona Forbes for her enduring contributions to the camp’s mission and legacy.
For decades, Forbes had served as a dedicated board member and supporter for Camp Gross, helping to ensure that generations of children could experience the joys of outdoor exploration, camaraderie, and personal growth. She died in 2020. Her leadership, vision, and commitment left a lasting impact on the camp.
She spearheaded a Brick Project which has now totaled close to 400 commemorative bricks placed near the main lodge. Bricks can continue to be purchased for $50 by emailing: campgrossny@gmail.com for more information.
The ceremony included opening remarks and reflection from Vinny Vecchio, Camp Gross Board of Directors President. Words of tribute were provided by Marti Webster and Sally Lawson, board members, Mark Forbes, son of Alona and Mary Forbes Nalepa, daughter of Alona and current board member. The unveiling of the dedication rock was completed by Mackenzie, Faith, Cassandra, and Alexander Nalepa, grandchildren of Alona. Mary Forbes Nalepa read a quote from Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn to summarize her mother’s support of Camp Gross: “I do not wish any reward but to know I have done the right thing.” Guests were invited to tour the camp following the dedication.
The rock dedication coincides with the upcoming Golf Tournament to benefit Camp Gross named in Alona and her late husband. The Dr. John R. & Alona Forbes Golf Tournament will be held this year on Saturday, Aug. 16 at the Cassadaga Country Club on Frisbee Road in Cassadaga. The Board of Directors is still looking for tee sponsors as well as basket raffle and gift card items for the fund raiser. For participation in any of these fund raisers please contact: vvecch@yahoo.com or sjlawon66@gamil.com for pick up. Golfers may sign up to play by calling CCC at 716-595-3003 for the 9 a.m. shot-gun start scramble.
