The combined Classes of 1950 from Dunkirk High School, Saint Mary’s Academy and Industrial High School celebrated their 75th Diamond reunion this month with a luncheon held at the White Inn.
Seventy-five years marks a significant milestone for anything, and for the 30 or so remaining classmates (in their mid-90s), this is quite an accomplishment. Many of the classmates were unable to attend due to distance or health issues, but sent notes or called to say how they were doing. These friends and classmates were missed but their stories were shared at the luncheon.
A book of all classmates was created that included names and addresses for those living, and memorial information for those who have passed on.
The luncheon started Aug. 14 with Mary Thompson Mirek leading the group in prayer for those deceased, and a blessing for all who are still with us. An excellent meal and service was provided by the White Inn and by server Marjorie.
The various letters received were passed around, and information was revealed from classmates’ phone calls. The attendees all received a copy of the book “Dunkirk: Then and Now” which the group much appreciated. As they looked through the book and pictures, there were many discussions of their childhoods growing up in Dunkirk. They all recalled the many places where they used to work, shop or just hang out. Rita Gawlowicz LaPaglia gave a closing blessing and best wishes for many more memorable years ahead.
The reunion committee consisted of Dolores Kokocinski Raczek (class secretary and chairperson), Mirek, LaPaglia, and Margaret Draves Larson.
