FORESTVILLE — A celebration for the first home in the Town of Hanover — 21 Pearl St. — drew a crowd of more than a hundred people to witness the unveiling of a plaque in its honor.
“The day was perfect, and the crowd congenial,” Nancy Adams Fry of Imagine Forestville said.
Town of Hanover Supervisor Lou Pelletter and Town Historian Vince Martonis spoke of the significance of the site at the event. Several guests were dressed in outfits from the 19th century. A proclamation from Senator George Borrello was also read. Guests were also invited on a tour of the home and enjoyed a light reception following the dedication.
Imagine Forestville President Aimee Rogers called the dedication “a great event.” She described it as “a nice step back into history.”
The home is going on the National Historic Register as the town of Hanover pursues a Historic District to honor the area’s deep ties to the Erie Railroad. Completed in the mid-19th century, the railroad connected Forestville to regional and national markets, and sparked a building boom that gave rise to the elegant homes and thriving businesses along Center and Pearl Streets.
Imagine Forestville recently submitted its final application to the New York State Historic Preservation Office for the establishment of a historic district. Dedicating a plaque in honor of the home was viewed as a way to garner attention at the state and national level for the proposed historic district.
“It was a beautiful day,” Rogers said. “It was a great turnout.”
