Point Gratiot Park was a picturesque and windy venue for Monday afternoon’s well-attended event. Teachers, students and parents warmly greeted one another after a summer apart.
The backpack dropoff was part of National Grid’s “Empowering Futures — One Backpack at a Time” initiative. The company has distributed supplies to more than 4,000 children across Western New York this month as part of the initiative.
National Grid also offered backpacks and supplies to Dunkirk kids last year, National Grid’s David Bertola said. He said this year’s supplies are valued at about $15,000.
The Back to School Bash also included booths from Southern Chautauqua Federal Credit Union, United Way of Chautauqua County, and the Teacher’s Desk, a non-profit that gathers low-cost school supplies.
