Pomfret closing on new town hall Sept. 9

Pomfret intends to close out its purchase of a building for a new town hall on Sept. 9, Town Supervisor Daniel Pacos reported Wednesday at a Town Board meeting.

Pomfret is buying a former church on Chestnut Road to convert into the new town hall. Pacos said the original agreement with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints contained a 90-day review and a closing at the end of that period.

However, Pacos said that didn’t work for the church, due to New York state regulations which he didn’t really get into.

The Town Board had to approve the new closing date as an amendment to the purchase agreement, and did.

The Pomfret board’s original resolution in March to purchase the Chestnut Road building laid out a purchase price of $370,000, with remodeling to cost up to $600,000. Pacos said Wednesday the town will be able to pay the purchase price with grant funding.

He said the work will largely be on the interior, with no significant structural changes needed.

“We won’t be putting up trusses in snowstorms,” cracked Deputy Town Supervisor Ann Eckman.

Pacos still wants to do a final walk-through of the building before the closing date. Once Pomfret officially owns the property, “we’d like to meet with our staff and review the spaces” in the building, he added.

There’s one big question still looming over the new arrangement: Will the town of Dunkirk join in?

Pacos has proposed that the town move its offices to Pomfret’s new building so they can share facilities. The town of Dunkirk’s offices are actually closer to the Chestnut Road building than Pomfret’s current Day Street office in Fredonia.

However, surprise and skepticism greeted the proposal at the next Dunkirk Town Board meeting. Little has been heard about the proposal from Dunkirk’s end since.

“I think they’re waiting until we’re closing,” Pacos said. “That will get that discussion moving along.”

Pacos said he intended to inform Dunkirk Town Supervisor Priscilla Penfold about the new closing date at the next day’s meeting of the North County Water District Board.

Starting at $3.50/week.
