Noting ‘milestones:’ Dunkirk School offers tenure to 18

OBSERVER Photos by M.J. Stafford School 3 Principal Josh Tedone welcomes a meeting of the Dunkirk Board of Education in his school’s cafeteria Tuesday.

The Dunkirk Board of Education granted tenure to 18 employees, and welcomed a new student body representative for the 2025-26 school year, at its September meeting.

Senior Giada Kirell was sworn in as the student representative by Superintendent Brian Swatland early in the meeting. Building principals later offered brief presentations praising the people who got tenure.

Getting tenure is “one of the absolute most significant milestones in an individual’s career,” said Mark Frazier, the Dunkirk school district’s director of human resources.

He said the successful tenure candidates “have been under the microscope” for at least three years before getting the honor. People who are new to the Dunkirk district and did not get tenure at any other school must work at least four years to be eligible, Frazier said.

Here are the people who received tenure:

“It was nice to see all that,” commented Board of Education President Ken Kozlowski after the presentations finished. “I’m glad you’re here.”

The meeting was held at School 3 and several of the school’s students and staff offered enthusiastic welcomes at the door. The Board of Education will be holding its meetings at various schools around the Dunkirk district this year.

However, the meetings are no longer live-streamed on the school district’s website.

Offering a brief presentation about School 3, Principal Josh Tedone said their daily priorities are “attendance, kindness, literacy.” The goal is “creating a warm, welcoming, safe, affirming environment for all learners.”
