United in Peace event seeks ‘healing’

In the wake of recent violence — both domestic and global — the Northern Chautauqua community is being called together to unite in prayer, and be an example of hope. United in Peace, an ecumenical candlelight prayer service, will be on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 1030 Central Ave., Dunkirk.
The service will begin at the pavilion behind the church with Scripture readings and reflections led by Rev. Robert J. Owczarczak, pastor of The Lord’s Vineyard family of Catholic parishes, and Pastor Matthew Schettler of St. Paul Lutheran Church.
From there, participants will process to the front of the church on Central Avenue with candles and “Pray for Peace” signs, spending 15 minutes in silent prayer as a public witness of hope — not only for the Northern Chautauqua area, but for a world torn by war, terrorism and division.
“This is a time for us to come together –people of all faith traditions — and ask God to bring peace and healing to our neighborhoods, our nation, and the world,” organizers said. “We hold in prayer those affected by violence in our streets as well as those suffering from war.”
Candles will be provided, and participants are welcome to bring their own “Pray for Peace” signs, or make their own with materials provided at the event. Because the event is outdoors, those who have difficulty standing are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.
“All are welcome,” organizers stressed. “Our presence matters. Together, we can show that violence, war, and hatred do not have the last word.”
