County eyes spending $8.5M on DPF buildings
Chautauqua County is looking to spend millions of dollars for public facilities buildings in Falconer and Mayville.
During the legislature’s Public Facilities Committee meeting, committee members passed two bond resolutions, one for $7,226,730, and another for $1,224,675.
The more than $7.2 million bond is to finance the cost of the reconstruction of and Improvements to and replacement of certain buildings at the Falconer Department of Public Facilities Transportation Highway Facility.
The more than $1.2 million bond is to finance the cost of the construction of a new Buildings and Grounds Maintenance Building at the Mayville Office Complex.
The bond resolutions will be brought before the full legislature at its meeting on Wednesday.
County Finance Director Kitty Crow said these bonds were included in the 2024 and 2025 capital budgets.
The 2025 budget has yet to be approved.
Crow said this step is a necessary part of the approval process, but there are no plans to borrow the money before next year.
She said because of the county’s healthy financial position, they can wait until the project is completed before issuing the bonds, instead of applying for short-term financing.
County DPF Director Tim Card said in Mayville there will be new construction on vacant land. They’re in the process of holding pre-construction meetings.
“With the bids being under budget, we will be starting to move some trees and dirt and get things going,” he said.
In Falconer, Crow said the money will be used for the demolition and reconstruction of the old Falconer shop.
“The demo is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2026 and probably be completed in late 2027,” she said.
Card said the plan is for the county to use its own staff to tear down the existing building and then a new building would be constructed. It will be large enough for the parks department, the county’s sign shop, storage and work space.
In addition, the county bonded another $1 million to finance the cost of the purchase of various items of equipment for construction and maintenance by Public Facilities.
