Healing with horses: Riding offers powerful tool to thrive

We’re not here just to survive. We’re here to thrive. As human beings, we possess the extraordinary ability to think, feel, dream, and connect. We are driven not only by necessity but by a deeper desire to live meaningful, fulfilling lives.
We’ve been taught to associate success with wealth, college degrees, powerful job titles, and a carefully curated image of material comfort. But what if success isn’t something we can put in a bank account or post on social media?
What if true success looks more like peace of mind, loving what you do and who you are, staying healthy, and perhaps most importantly, making a positive difference in the lives of others?
Centaur Stride was founded with one clear purpose: to enhance the lives of individuals with developmental disabilities, people who often face challenges beyond the daily grind most of us experience.
As a pediatric physical therapist, I saw firsthand how underserved this population was. Resources, opportunities, and support were often in short supply. Laws have improved all this over the past three decades but are once again being taken away or cut back
Centaur Stride was a grassroots effort with no funding as an adjunct to therapy. It was a place where individuals with disabilities could thrive, where families could feel supported and connected. Where healing and growth happened in the most unlikely place: on horseback. I remember the opposition because most people thought putting someone with a disability on a horse was a reckless act. Research and time have proven them all wrong!
Therapeutic horseback riding isn’t just a feel-good activity; it’s a powerful tool for improving mental and physical well-being.
In today’s world, where stress, anxiety, and burnout are on the rise, who couldn’t use a little more peace of mind?
Horses have a unique way of meeting people where they are, without judgment. They mirror emotions, encourage trust, and provide calm in a chaotic world.
Recently, my social media feed has been filled with quotes from the late, great Jane Goodall, an icon of compassion, resilience, and action.
“We’re going through very dark times: socially, politically, and especially environmentally. If you think globally, you get really depressed — so act locally. Each one of us makes some impact… every single day.” — Jane Goodall (1934-2025)
That quote speaks directly about our mission. At Centaur Stride, we’re not trying to fix the entire world. But we are trying to make our corner of it a little better, every single day.
And again, we need your help to keep doing that. Join Us – Two Ways to Get Involved. On Oct. 18, we’ll be at the Chautauqua County Humane Society’s Pet Expo at the Jamestown Ice Arena. Stop by our booth, check out our basket raffle, take a turn on our Equicizer, and learn more about how you can support or volunteer with Centaur Stride.
Beginning Nov. 1, ticket sales start for our Annual Christmas Raffle! The baskets this year are truly spectacular. There’s something for everyone! Info will be posted on our Facebook page. Baskets will also be displayed, with tickets for sale, at Christmas in the Village of Westfield on Nov. 22 and 23.
We’re deeply grateful for the ongoing support of the Northern Chautauqua and Chautauqua Region Community Foundations.
On Oct 7, a conference called “Scenario Planning” aimed at helping nonprofit leaders think creatively about how to stay sustainable in financially uncertain times, will be held in Dunkirk, sponsored by The Capacity Lab. It’s something we’ve been practicing at Centaur Stride for over three decades, constantly adapting, pivoting, and doing more with less.
Now, passing the torch to the next generation, my successor, Holly Reslink, brings fresh energy and perspective. I’m excited to see how she’ll shape the future. I also often wonder what it must be like to not be in constant survival mode, just trying to keep the doors open.
At the end of the day, the secret to our longevity has always been the same: community support and God’s Grace.
You don’t have to be wealthy or powerful to make a difference. You just have to start where you are, do what you can, and care enough to take action.
On behalf of everyone at Centaur Stride, thank you for believing in our mission, supporting our riders, and helping us to keep this special place alive.
Let’s keep making an impact — together.
Claudia Monroe is founder and president of Centaur Stride.
