State announces large paving projects in county for 2026

More than $6 million of roadwork by the state is scheduled for next year.

In a news release, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced what she called “an unprecedented investment to renew dozens of vital state roadways across New York State during the 2026 construction season.”

Leveraging the $800 million that Hochul secured in the most recent state budget to augment the final two years of its five-year, $34.3 billion Capital Plan, the New York State Department of Transportation will invest more than $600 million in over 180 paving projects across the state to be completed next year.

These projects, which total almost 2,150 lane miles, are in addition to the paving initiatives already scheduled as part of NYSDOT’s core programs and, taken together, represent the most ambitious annual road resurfacing agenda ever put forward by NYSDOT.

“As someone who has ridden on virtually every mile of every state road across New York, I know firsthand every curve and every pothole, and next year we will be making an unprecedented investment to improve state roads across New York,” Hochul said. “New Yorkers will be seeing crews out there like never before next year, rejuvenating highways, enhancing the safety of the traveling public, and laying a solid foundation for economic development across the Empire State.”

Western New York is scheduled to get $49,123,513 for 24 projects.

Projects scheduled in Chautauqua County include:

– $2 million to resurface Route 60 from the bridge over Mill Creek to Cassadaga south village line.

– $2 million to resurface Route 426 from the Pennsylvania state line to Harrington Hill Road.

– $1 million to resurface Route 5 in the City of Dunkirk.

– $1.2 million to overlay Route 394 from County Road 65 to the Cattaraugus County line.

Dunkirk Mayor Kate Wdowiasz said, “On behalf of the City of Dunkirk, I wish to express our sincere appreciation to Governor Hochul and the New York State Department of Transportation for advancing the paving project along Route 5 within our city limits. This critical infrastructure investment will significantly improve roadway conditions, enhance public safety, and support continued economic growth in our region. The Governor’s commitment to modernizing New York’s transportation network ensures that communities like Dunkirk can continue to thrive and remain accessible for residents, businesses, and visitors alike.”

Starting at $3.50/week.
