Forestville Elementary recently hosted local veterans for a celebration just prior to Veterans Day, including a parade around the school and custom thank you cards made by students of all ages.
Veterans walked through the halls as students and staff cheered to celebrate their dedication to our nation. Those in attendance included family members, residents of the Forestville community, and faculty and staff.
Veterans in attendance for the event were presented with cards thanking them for their service, handmade by members of the Key Club. Cards were also delivered to the local American Legion and VFW post.
Sophia Stewart, the district’s Student Board Member, said it was “a very nice celebration”, and described “a good energy throughout.” Stewart saw smiles in the halls and felt the impact of the event.

“It was just a nice thing to have for the veterans that worked so hard to get where we’re at today,” Stewart said.
A guest at the district’s latest Board of Education meeting added that the veterans “were so appreciative” of the event, especially the cards that were made by students. They were also appreciative of the fact that students were being taught about respect for veterans and patriotism for their country. Members of the American Legion were talking about it days later, and some veterans were so touched that they had tears in their eyes.
Superintendent Dr. John O’Connor said the event was “really well attended” and characterized it as a positive event. The district plans to make the celebration an annual event at the Elementary School.
