Sheridan approves slight tax hike; stays under cap
OBSERVER Photo by Braden Carmen Sheridan Town Board member Colleen Yerico called it “outstanding” that the 2026 Town Budget stayed under the tax cap by over $10,000.
SHERIDAN — Costs are up nearly everywhere you look, and the town of Sheridan is no different this budget season. But as far as tax increases go, Sheridan’s increase in 2026 is minimal.
“We’re in good shape,” said Supervisor Tom Wik.
The tax rate in the town of Sheridan increased by five cents per thousand dollars of assessed value, from $4.28 per thousand in 2025 to $4.33 per thousand in 2026. In total, the town of Sheridan tax levy in 2026 is $565,067. The town managed to stay below the tax cap by just over $10,000.
“That’s outstanding,” Town Board member Colleen Yerico said of staying well under the tax cap.
General appropriations in the 2026 budget total $987,766, while the town’s Highway Department fund shows appropriations of $1,517,870. The general fund will be supported by $43,610 raised by taxes, while the Highway Department fund will be supported by $511,370 raised by taxes.
The town of Sheridan’s 2026 budget shows total appropriations of $2,601,402. In addition to that amount, the town of Sheridan’s Fire District taxes are $274,385. The town of Sheridan has a total taxable assessed value of $128,024,317.
In total, with the fire tax included, a total of $839,452 will be collected from town of Sheridan residents in taxes to support total appropriations of $2,875,787. The fire tax rate in the town of Sheridan has fluctuated slightly in the last three years, with a rate of $2.08 in 2024; $2.01 in 2025; and $2.02 in 2026.
After voters approved the elimination of one Town Justice position, the Town Board amended the budget to re-allocate the funds originally budgeted for two Town Justices. The Town Board took $5,000 from the salary of the eliminated judge to increase the salary of the judge taking on extra duties in the town, Jonathan Szumigala. The remaining $10,900 budgeted for a second justice was transferred to the contractual expense line for the Justice Court. The extra funds in the contractual account will go toward training and other costs for the Justice Court as necessary.
The next meeting of the Sheridan Town Board will take place on Wednesday, Dec. 10 at 7 p.m. at the Sheridan Community Center.
