Unfriendly paths: Ferguson irate over crosswalk ignorers

OBSERVER Photo by M.J. Stafford This bumpout at a Fredonia crosswalk is just weeks old but has already taken a beating.

The next time you drive past a crosswalk where a pedestrian is waiting to cross, imagine Fredonia Mayor Michael Ferguson frowning.

Ferguson has complained about the issue at most village government meetings since he became mayor. He continued his campaign at last week’s Board of Trustees meeting, reminding residents that they are supposed to stop for people waiting to use crosswalks.

“I wanna thank the people who finished off Route 20 and had gotten that lined. There’s still some light work to be done, I think the snow kind of disrupted a little bit,” the mayor began.

“The crosswalks are back in place,” he declared, mentioning a video he has apparently recorded of alleged crosswalk incidents. “We recorded probably 20 crossing incidents where the public has not stopped for residents to cross the street. In fact, in a number of them, the resident got halfway across the street and was caught as traffic continued to drive past.”

Ferguson stated, “We are working on that. Trustee (Jon) Espersen came back with a great idea from the last NYCOM meeting where we would have flashing yellow lights.” That may be a reference to LED lights affixed to crosswalk signs in other municipalities; the lights can be activated by someone looking to use the crossing.

Mayor Michael Ferguson constantly warns residents to be careful around crosswalks in order to watch out for pedestrians.

“Nonetheless, it is the law across the United States of America, not just in New York State,” Ferguson commanded, tapping his desk for emphasis. “God forbid that anybody get hurt any time. But with the holidays and the icy roads coming up: Please, please, please be aware, when people are waiting to cross the road, they have the right (to cross) and you must stop and allow them to cross.

“I will repeat that ad nauseum until we get that right,” the mayor promised.

The OBSERVER has personally witnessed another crosswalk issue, this one at the new bumpouts. The state Department of Transportation put the bumpouts at several crosswalks in the village during the recent repaving project, in order to make pedestrians more visible and to reduce the length of their crossings.

However, several drifting drivers have already smashed over the lips of at least one bumpout. One of them busted up an orange safety bollard that was placed on the bumpout to make it more visible.
